Associate
Attorneys
Associates are given substantial responsibility
in handling litigation matters, according to their level of expertise.
The associate’s role in litigation and other legal matters is
crucial: assisting the senior attorneys involves not only legal research
and writing, but in-depth involvement, including depositions, investigation,
client contact, trial and appeals. Our associates are our future;
their development is of paramount importance in order to maintain
the vitality of the firm.
Member lawyers as well as senior associates work
closely with the associates to ensure development and understanding
of cases. Our clients demand strong, aggressive representation at
all levels; associates are expected to assist and in some instances
take the lead in handling cases.
Associate salaries for first year lawyers are comparable
to other medium to large sized law firms in West Virginia.
Membership to the firm is usually on a seven year
track. Part of the compensation system at FS&B is a "bonus"
established at the end of the fiscal year (i.e., December) which provides
additional compensation based on the money each attorney brings into
the firm.
Summer
Law Clerks
FS&B has an excellent summer clerk program for
first and second year law students. Students are given the opportunity
to work with all the various practice groups in the firm. More importantly,
student clerks are actively involved in the legal process, attending
depositions, hearings, and trials with the attorneys in addition to
drafting motions and other pleadings. Social activities are also offered,
from firm dinners to picnics and other events throughout the summer
months.
Summer law clerk salaries are competitive with other
firms in the region. The summer program is tailored to suit the schedule
of the individual clerks, but typically a 12 week clerkship is envisioned,
starting within 1-2 weeks of the end of the Spring semester of law
school.
